Pierre-Lassonde Pavillion – MNBAQ

The expansion of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec enabled the institution to gain 161,460 sq. ft. in area, in addition to the existing 193,750 sq. ft. The new pavilion, built on the grounds of the former Dominican convent, includes the addition of 6,250 sq. ft. of public space, 12,600 sq. ft. of exhibition halls, 5,750 sq. ft. of collections spaces, functional spaces (reserves, preparation areas), a reception area for visitors, an amphitheater with fixed seats, a café and a gift shop. One of the complexities of this project lies in its quality of assembly, of which attention to architectural details was imperative. EBC has worked with professionals and specialized subcontractors to find solutions to ensure that international standards in museum design and conservation are met.

  • Construction of a 250-foot tunnel, which connects the new pavilion to the existing building.
  • Project carried out in an urban environment with high human density.
  • Leveling of walls and laying of limestone.
  • Construction of a 12.5 m high Great Hall curtain wall made of glass panels, cantilevered to the main entrance.
  • Construction of a central staircase with 79 spiral-shaped steps made up of four pieces of steel weighing 24,040 kg, each 15 m long.
  • Construction of a cantilevered and transparent side staircase to the building.
  • A 34,480 sq. ft. green roof.
  • LEED® Silver certified project.
  • Steel Construction Excellence Award - Jury's Award, ICCA, 2016.
  • Marcus Vitruve Award, Challenge of the project manager in occupational health and safety category, CEGQ, 2014.
